Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Arbitration and Mediation Centre Launched on the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee

Kolkata, 6 July 2026: On the occasion of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Arbitration and Mediation Centre (DSPMAMC) was formally inaugurated at New Town, Kolkata. The event also witnessed the launch of the Centre's official website, www.dspmamc.org.in, dedicated to promoting Arbitration, Mediation, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), and Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) in accordance with the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 and the Mediation Act, 2023.

The programme was conceptualized and chaired by Swapnil Mukherjee, Ph.D. (Law) Research Scholar at Amity Law School, Kolkata, Amity University Kolkata, and Advocate, High Court at Calcutta. In his address, he highlighted the increasing importance of institutional arbitration in India and stated that his doctoral research focuses on strengthening institutional arbitration as an effective and credible mechanism for dispute resolution. He emphasized that the Centre has been established to bridge academic research with practical implementation by providing a professional platform for arbitration, mediation, legal research, training, and Online Dispute Resolution.

The programme was graced by Dr. Nirupama, Associate Professor of Law; Paromita Dey, Advocate, Alipore Court; Sourin Das, Notary Public and Advocate; Saswata Chatterjee, Public Prosecutor, High Court at Calcutta; Argha Roy, Advocate; and Ketan Makharia, Advocate, Supreme Court of India.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Nirupama appreciated the initiative and emphasized that institutional arbitration and mediation are indispensable to the modern justice delivery system. She observed that legal education and research must actively promote ADR and institutional dispute resolution to ensure efficient, accessible, and timely justice.

The programme also received appreciation from Ms. Mharhoni T. Humtsoe, Research Scholar and Advocate, High Court of Nagaland, who commended the establishment of the Centre as a significant step towards strengthening institutional dispute resolution and promoting ADR in India. Ms. Ronika Shaw, Advocate, also appreciated the initiative and extended her best wishes for the Centre's future endeavours.

The programme concluded with the formal launch of the Centre's official website and a collective commitment to developing the Centre as a credible institution for arbitration, mediation, professional training, legal research, and the promotion of Alternative and Online Dispute Resolution in India.
